چکیده

One of the major drawbacks of IC engines is low efficiency and pollution resulting from incomplete combustion. In order to improve the emission properties and performance an oxygenated additive MTBE (Methyl tertiary butyl ether), is blended with gasoline. A four cylinder, 1817 cc engine was used for analysing both emission and performance characteristics. Tests were carried out with 100% pure gasoline and MTBE – blended gasoline (M5, M10). The BSFC and BTE of MTBE blended gasoline were observed to increase when compared to pure gasoline. Significant reduction in HC and CO emissions were observed with MTBE blended gasoline; however, CO2 and NOX emissions were increased.

The Subsurface Fate of Ethanol, A Look at the Emerging Oxygenate Alternative to MTBE, LUSTLine Bulletin 36

In response to the widespread contamination caused by MTBE-blended reformulated gasoline (RFG), legislative initiatives in several states and at the federal level have phased out, or are trying to phase out, the use of MTBE as a gasoline oxygenate. Ethanol is currently the most likely gasoline oxygenate alternative to MTBE. This potential for increased use of ethanol has been most widely acknow...

Health Effects of Exposure to Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE)

Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) (CAS No. 1634-04-4) is a volatile organic compound used almost exclusively as an oxygenate in unleaded gasoline to improve combustion efficiency. In the past it also had limited use as a therapeutic drug for dissolving cholesterol gallbladder stones. Currently, MTBE is added at 11% by volume to almost all of the gasoline used in California, although on March 2...

Biodegradation of Methyl tert-butyl ether by isolated bacteria from contaminated soils to gasoline

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was originally introduced as an additive to increase octane number into gasoline in the 1970s. Its use was primarily as an octane enhancer to replace lead in gasoline. Later on, it was also used as an oxygenate, up to 15% v/v, to accomplish a cleaner burning fuel with reduced emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The problem with MTBE is that it has cause...

Chemical Oxidation of MTBE and TBA

Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is a synthetic chemical that was historically used as an octane booster additive to gasoline. Increasingly there have been concerns about its toxicity and potential carcinogenicity. Because of these concerns, 18 states regulate MTBE levels in groundwater and 17 have banned its use in gasoline. Because of its chemical characteristics, MTBE contaminated sites ar...

MTBE and gasoline hydrocarbons in ground water of the United States.

The occurrence of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and gasoline hydrocarbons was examined in three types of studies of ground water conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey: major aquifer surveys, urban land-use studies, and agricultural land-use studies. The detection frequency of MTBE was dependent on the study type, with the highest detection frequency in urban land-use studies. Only 13 ground ...
